Ambling gait

An ambling gait is a smooth, usually four-beat horse gait between a walk and a trot. Its footfall sequence often moves the legs on each side together, reducing vertical bounce for the rider.

Horse gait: A patterned sequence of limb movements used by a horse to move across the ground. Ambling is one family of horse gaits, distinguished by its footfall timing.
Trot: A two-beat diagonal horse gait in which diagonal limb pairs move together, usually with a suspension phase. Its diagonal pairing and bounce contrast with the lateral coordination of many ambling gaits.
Gaited horse: A horse breed or individual able to perform one or more smooth intermediate gaits in addition to the standard gaits. Ambling is the defining movement trait sought in many gaited horses.
Gaited horse breeds: Horse breeds selected for inherited ability to perform distinctive intermediate gaits. These breeds preserve ambling traits through deliberate breeding.
Lateral sequence: A limb sequence in which the hind foot on one side lands before the forefoot on that same side. Many ambling patterns coordinate each side’s limbs in this order.
Walk: A slow, usually four-beat horse gait with each foot landing separately in sequence. The walk is slower and more clearly separated, while an amble commonly pairs same-side movement.
Tennessee Walking Horse: An American horse breed known for its running walk and calm riding temperament. Its running walk is a prominent, breed-defining ambling gait.
Medieval riding horse: A horse used in medieval Europe for travel, warfare, or ceremonial riding. Smooth ambling horses were prized for comfortable long-distance travel before modern roads.
Four-beat gait: A gait in which four footfalls occur at distinct times during each cycle. The separated footfalls create the characteristic rhythm of many ambling gaits.
Pace: A two-beat lateral horse gait in which the fore and hind legs on each side move together. The pace shares lateral coordination with some ambles but has a sharper two-beat rhythm.
