Ambush predation

Ambush predation is a hunting strategy in which a predator waits concealed or motionless before striking nearby prey. It reduces the need for prolonged pursuit.

Crypsis: Crypsis is the use of appearance or behavior to avoid detection by other organisms. Matching the surroundings can keep an ambush predator unnoticed until prey approach.
Anglerfish: Anglerfish are fishes whose first dorsal-fin spine is modified into a lure in many species. Deep-sea forms use a lure to bring prey within striking distance.
Pursuit predation: Pursuit predation is hunting in which a predator actively chases prey before capture. Unlike an ambusher, a pursuit predator spends energy closing distance through continued movement.
Predation: Predation is an interaction in which one organism captures and consumes another organism. Ambush predation is a specific strategy within this broader feeding interaction.
Camouflage: Camouflage is coloration, patterning, or form that makes an organism harder to detect in its surroundings. Many ambush predators use visual camouflage to conceal their position.

Sit-and-wait predation: Sit-and-wait predation is a strategy in which a predator remains in one place until prey come within reach. It describes the stationary waiting phase central to many ambushes.
Alligator snapping turtle: The alligator snapping turtle is a large freshwater turtle native to the southeastern United States. It uses a wormlike tongue lure to draw fish close to its jaws.
