Knowra Amelogenesis imperfecta Amelogenesis imperfecta Amelogenesis imperfecta is a group of inherited disorders that disrupt enamel formation. The resulting enamel may be thin, weak, discolored, or absent, often affecting most or all teeth.
Amelogenesis : Amelogenesis is the process by which specialized cells form and mature tooth enamel. The disorder arises when one or more stages of this enamel-forming process are impaired.
Tooth enamel : Tooth enamel is the highly mineralized outer covering of the crown of a tooth. Its thickness, mineral content, and structure are altered in these disorders.
Dental radiography : Dental radiography uses X-rays to image teeth and supporting structures. Radiographs help assess enamel thickness, tooth development, and associated dental problems.
Dentinogenesis imperfecta : Dentinogenesis imperfecta is an inherited disorder in which dentin develops abnormally, often causing discolored, fragile teeth. It primarily affects dentin, whereas amelogenesis imperfecta primarily affects enamel.
Enamel hypoplasia : Enamel hypoplasia is a quantitative defect in which less enamel forms than normal. Reduced enamel thickness is the defining feature of the hypoplastic form.
Dentin : Dentin is the mineralized tissue beneath enamel that forms most of a tooth. When enamel is thin or missing, the underlying dentin becomes exposed and discolored.
Dental bonding : Dental bonding attaches tooth-colored resin to a tooth to restore or protect its surface. Bonding can cover defects and reduce sensitivity in selected affected teeth.
Fluorosis : Dental fluorosis is a developmental enamel condition caused by excessive fluoride exposure while teeth form. It can alter enamel appearance but results from exposure rather than an inherited enamel disorder.
Enamel hypomineralization : Enamel hypomineralization is inadequate mineral deposition that leaves enamel softer or more porous than normal. Poor mineralization makes enamel weak even when its thickness is near normal.
Tooth development : Tooth development is the process by which teeth form, mineralize, and erupt. Amelogenesis imperfecta begins during the developmental formation of enamel.
