Amenemhat III

Amenemhat III was a 12th Dynasty pharaoh of Egypt who ruled during the Middle Kingdom. His reign is associated with major building projects and water management in the Faiyum.

Hawara: An archaeological site in the Faiyum containing Amenemhat III’s pyramid complex and mortuary temple. Its pyramid and temple are among the best-known monuments built under his rule.
Lake Moeris: The ancient name for a large lake in the Faiyum, identified by many scholars with Lake Qarun. Ancient accounts linked Faiyum water management under Amenemhat III to this lake.
Twelfth Dynasty of Egypt: A dynasty of Egyptian rulers that governed during much of the Middle Kingdom. Amenemhat III was one of its later and most powerful kings.
Sobekneferu: A pharaoh of Egypt’s Twelfth Dynasty who ruled after Amenemhat IV and was the dynasty’s final ruler. Her reign followed the succession crisis associated with the dynasty’s end.
Pyramid of Amenemhat III at Dahshur: A Middle Kingdom pyramid built for Amenemhat III at Dahshur, later abandoned as his burial place. Its construction preceded his burial at Hawara.
Bahr Yusuf: A Nile channel that carries water northward into the Faiyum depression. Its flow supplied the basin whose agriculture benefited from Middle Kingdom water control.

Irrigation: The deliberate supply and management of water for cultivating land. Canals and controlled flows connected royal works to farming in the Faiyum.
