American League

The American League is one of Major League Baseball’s two leagues, founded in 1901 and comprising 15 clubs. Its teams compete against National League teams in interleague play and the World Series.

Designated hitter: A baseball player who bats in place of a pitcher without taking the pitcher’s defensive position. The American League adopted the designated hitter in 1973, making it a defining difference from the National League.
Western League: A minor baseball league that Ban Johnson reorganized and transformed into the American League. The American League began as this league before declaring major-league status in 1901.
