American System

The American System was an economic program advocating a national bank, protective tariffs, and federally supported roads and canals to strengthen the United States economy.

Second Bank of the United States: A federally chartered bank that regulated credit and currency in the United States from 1816 to 1836. The program’s national-bank plank relied on centralized credit and a more stable currency.
War of 1812: A conflict between the United States and Britain from 1812 to 1815, also involving Indigenous nations and other powers. Wartime trade disruption strengthened arguments for domestic manufacturing and economic independence.
Nullification Crisis: A political confrontation in 1832–1833 over South Carolina’s attempt to nullify federal tariffs. The crisis showed how tariff policy could provoke resistance to federal authority.
Tariff of 1816: The first U.S. tariff designed chiefly to protect domestic manufacturing after the War of 1812. It put the program’s protective-tariff principle into federal law.
Protective tariff: A tax on imports intended to protect domestic producers from foreign competition. Tariffs sheltered American manufacturers while raising revenue for the federal government.
Report on Manufactures: Alexander Hamilton’s 1791 report urging federal measures to encourage manufacturing in the United States. Hamilton’s earlier case for federal economic policy anticipated parts of Clay’s program.
Maysville Road veto: Andrew Jackson’s 1830 veto of federal funding for a road located entirely within Kentucky. The veto challenged federal support for projects that did not cross state boundaries.
Second Party System: The period of U.S. politics from the 1820s to the 1850s dominated by Democrats and Whigs. Whigs adopted much of the American System, making it a defining party-policy divide.
Internal improvements: Publicly supported transportation and infrastructure projects, including roads, canals, and bridges. Federally supported infrastructure was meant to connect markets and lower the cost of moving goods.
Henry Clay's American System speech: A 1824 address in which Henry Clay presented a national bank, protective tariff, and internal improvements as a unified policy. Clay’s speech gave the program its clearest public formulation.
