Americo-Liberians

Americo-Liberians are descendants of Black American settlers who founded Liberia. They held disproportionate political and economic power from the republic’s independence in 1847 until the 1980 coup.

American Colonization Society: A U.S. organization founded in 1816 that promoted the relocation of free Black people to Africa. It organized and financed the settlement that became Liberia.
True Whig Party: A Liberian political party that governed from 1878 until the 1980 military coup. Its long rule entrenched Americo-Liberian dominance in national politics.
Joseph Jenkins Roberts: Liberia’s first president, born free in Virginia and elected after the republic declared independence. His career embodied the leadership of the early American-born settler generation.
Indigenous Liberians: The diverse peoples whose communities predated Liberia’s founding and who constitute most of its population. Their political exclusion contrasted with the privileges held by Americo-Liberian elites.
Liberia: A West African republic founded by settlers from the United States and declared independent in 1847. Americo-Liberian history is inseparable from the republic they established.
Liberian Constitution of 1847: Liberia’s founding constitution, establishing a republican government and restricting citizenship to people of African descent. Its institutions structured political participation under the settler-led republic.
Edward James Roye: Liberia’s president from 1870 to 1871 and the first president of African-American settler descent born in the United States to hold office. His presidency marked a shift in leadership among the settler community.
1915–1917 Kru Coast War: A series of conflicts between Liberian forces and Kru communities along the coast during 1915–1917. The conflict showed the costs of extending state authority over Indigenous communities.
Monrovia: Liberia’s capital city, founded in 1822 and named for U.S. President James Monroe. The settlement became the political center of Americo-Liberian power.
Indirect rule: A system of governance in which a central authority administers populations through local leaders and institutions. Liberian officials used local authorities to extend state control beyond coastal settlements.
