Amhara Region

Amhara Region is a regional state in northwestern Ethiopia, inhabited chiefly by Amhara people. Its territory includes the historic city of Gondar and parts of the Ethiopian highlands.

Tewodros II: Tewodros II was emperor of Ethiopia from 1855 to 1868, known for efforts to centralize the state. Born in the region, he rose from its political landscape to rule Ethiopia.
Blue Nile: The Blue Nile is a major tributary of the Nile River, rising at Lake Tana in Ethiopia. Its headwaters link the region’s landscapes to downstream countries and water politics.
Tigray Region: Tigray Region is Ethiopia’s northernmost regional state, with a distinct Tigrayan majority and political history. It borders Amhara Region and is central to recent conflict and territorial disputes.
Amhara people: The Amhara are an Ethiopian ethnic group whose traditional language is Amharic. They form the region’s chief population and give it its name.
Solomonic dynasty: The Solomonic dynasty was an Ethiopian imperial house that claimed descent from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Its rulers established courts and religious institutions in cities within today’s region.
Haile Selassie: Haile Selassie was emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974, apart from the Italian occupation. His imperial government reshaped administration in the region before the 1974 revolution.
Tis Abay: Tis Abay is a waterfall on the Blue Nile near Lake Tana in Ethiopia. The falls illustrate the river’s local landscape and attract visitors.
Oromia Region: Oromia Region is Ethiopia’s largest regional state by area and is associated chiefly with the Oromo people. Its scale and population provide a useful comparison with Amhara Region.
