Ammonia solution
Ammonia solution is a mixture of ammonia dissolved in water. Its dissolved ammonia makes the liquid alkaline and chemically reactive.
Ammonia: Ammonia is a colorless compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with formula NH₃. It is the dissolved substance responsible for the solution’s characteristic chemistry.
Household ammonia: Household ammonia is a diluted aqueous ammonia product sold for domestic cleaning. It is the familiar consumer form of ammonia solution.
Concentration: Concentration expresses the amount of a substance in a specified amount of mixture or solution. Ammonia solution’s strength varies widely between household products and concentrated reagents.
Anhydrous ammonia: Anhydrous ammonia is ammonia containing little or no water, commonly stored as a pressurized liquid or gas. Unlike ammonia solution, it is not diluted in water and requires different storage and handling.
Ammonium hydroxide: Ammonium hydroxide is a conventional name for aqueous ammonia, not an isolable compound with a distinct molecular identity. The name suggests a dissolved hydroxide, though the solution is chiefly ammonia, water, and ammonium and hydroxide ions.
Cleaning agent: A cleaning agent is a substance used to remove dirt, grease, stains, or microbes from surfaces. Ammonia solution’s alkalinity helps loosen grease and certain residues.
Mass fraction: Mass fraction is the mass of one component divided by the total mass of a mixture. It is a common way to state the ammonia content of commercial solutions.
Ammonia gas: Ammonia gas is gaseous NH₃, a pungent, colorless substance at ordinary conditions. It is the vapor that can escape from ammonia solution, rather than the liquid mixture itself.
Ammonium ion: The ammonium ion, NH₄⁺, forms when ammonia accepts a proton. It is produced when dissolved ammonia accepts a proton from water or another acid.
Qualitative inorganic analysis: Qualitative inorganic analysis identifies ions through characteristic chemical reactions and observations. Ammonia solution can precipitate metal hydroxides or form soluble metal–ammonia complexes.
