Ammonium perchlorate
Ammonium perchlorate is the inorganic salt NH₄ClO₄. It is a strong oxidizer used in solid rocket propellants and pyrotechnic compositions.
Composite propellant: A solid rocket propellant made from oxidizer particles dispersed in a polymeric fuel binder. Ammonium perchlorate commonly supplies the oxidizer in this propellant class.
Thermal decomposition: The chemical breakdown of a substance caused by heating. Heating initiates the decomposition pathways that govern ammonium perchlorate combustion.
Ionic compound: A substance composed of cations and anions held together by electrostatic attraction. Ammonium perchlorate is an ionic crystal of NH₄⁺ and ClO₄⁻.
Perchlorate contamination: Environmental pollution by perchlorate ions in soil, surface water, or groundwater. Manufacture, use, and disposal of ammonium perchlorate can release perchlorate into the environment.
Ammonium nitrate: An inorganic salt, NH₄NO₃, used chiefly in fertilizers and also in explosives and propellants. It is another ammonium oxidizer, but its thermal behavior and performance differ.
Solid rocket motor: A rocket engine that burns solid propellant contained within its casing. Ammonium-perchlorate propellant burns inside these motors to generate thrust.
Oxidizer: A substance that accepts electrons or enables another substance to undergo oxidation. Ammonium perchlorate supplies oxidizing species without relying on atmospheric oxygen.
Ammonia: A colorless nitrogen hydride with formula NH₃ and a pungent odor. Ammonium ions are formed by protonating ammonia.
Thyroid hormone: A hormone produced by the thyroid gland that regulates metabolism and supports development. Perchlorate can interfere with iodide uptake needed for thyroid hormone production.
Potassium perchlorate: An inorganic salt, KClO₄, used as an oxidizer in pyrotechnics and some propellants. It shares the perchlorate anion but differs in cation, solubility, and common applications.
