Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic penicillin antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria by inhibiting cell-wall synthesis. Its oral absorption and broad activity make it widely used for common bacterial infections.

Penicillin-binding proteins: Bacterial enzymes that build and remodel peptidoglycan in the cell wall. Amoxicillin binds these enzymes and blocks the final cross-linking steps of cell-wall construction.
Streptococcal pharyngitis: A throat infection caused by group A Streptococcus, typically Streptococcus pyogenes. Amoxicillin is a standard treatment when this bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected.
Ampicillin: A semisynthetic aminopenicillin antibiotic related to amoxicillin. The drugs have similar antibacterial spectra, but amoxicillin is generally better absorbed orally.
Penicillin: A family of beta-lactam antibiotics that inhibit bacterial cell-wall synthesis. Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic member of this antibiotic family.
Antibiotic-associated diarrhea: Diarrhea occurring during or after antibiotic treatment, caused by disrupted intestinal microbes or other effects. Amoxicillin can disturb gut bacteria and cause diarrhea during treatment.
Peptidoglycan: A mesh-like polymer of sugars and peptides that gives bacterial cell walls strength. Amoxicillin disrupts the cross-linking that gives this wall material structural strength.
Acute otitis media: A rapid-onset infection of the middle ear, often occurring in children. Amoxicillin is commonly used when antibiotic treatment is indicated.
Penicillin V: An orally administered penicillin antibiotic with a relatively narrow antibacterial spectrum. Compared with penicillin V, amoxicillin covers additional bacteria, including some enteric organisms.
Antibiotic: A substance used to kill bacteria or inhibit their growth. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic, not a treatment for viral infections.
Clostridioides difficile infection: An intestinal infection that can follow disruption of the gut microbiota by antibiotics. Amoxicillin exposure can raise the risk, though this complication is uncommon.
