Amphibious vehicle

An amphibious vehicle is designed to travel on both land and water, using wheels, tracks, or a hull suited to movement across the two environments.

Buoyancy: The upward force a fluid exerts on an immersed object, opposing its weight. A vehicle must displace enough water to stay afloat when operating afloat.
DUKW: A United States military amphibious truck developed during World War II. It carried troops and supplies from ships onto shore during wartime landings.
Amphibious warfare: Military operations that use naval forces to project power onto a shore. Military demand has driven many major amphibious vehicle designs.
Hovercraft: A vehicle supported above a surface by a cushion of pressurized air. It crosses land and water without relying on conventional wheels or a displacement hull.
Displacement hull: A hull that moves through water by displacing a volume of it equal to its own weight. Many amphibious vehicles rely on hull shape to float and move through water.
Landing Vehicle Tracked: A tracked amphibious landing craft used to transport personnel and cargo from ships to shore. Its tracks enabled it to leave the water and continue across beaches.
All-terrain vehicle: A motor vehicle designed to travel over varied and rough terrain. Amphibious vehicles extend the all-terrain idea from land onto water.
Personal watercraft: A small motorized watercraft ridden or operated by one or a few people. It offers water mobility but is not designed for ordinary land travel.
Waterjet propulsion: A propulsion system that expels a high-speed stream of water to generate thrust. Waterjets can propel vehicles without exposed propellers that are vulnerable near shore.
AAV-7: A tracked amphibious assault vehicle used by the United States Marine Corps and other forces. It combines troop transport on water with armored movement on land.
