Amtrak

Amtrak is the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, a U.S. government-owned company that operates most intercity passenger rail service in the United States.

Northeast Corridor: A rail corridor linking Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. This is Amtrak’s busiest corridor and its most heavily used passenger rail infrastructure.
Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008: A U.S. law that reauthorized rail funding and established performance measures for Amtrak and intercity passenger service. It set federal requirements for measuring and improving Amtrak’s performance.
Rail Passenger Service Act: A 1970 U.S. law that created the National Railroad Passenger Corporation to take over intercity passenger service from participating railroads. This law established the framework under which Amtrak began operating.
Intercity passenger rail in the United States: Passenger train service connecting cities across state or regional boundaries in the United States. Amtrak became the principal national operator of this form of travel.

Penn Central Transportation Company: A U.S. railroad formed in 1968 by merging the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central Railroad. Penn Central’s financial crisis intensified pressure for federal intervention in passenger rail.
Amtrak Reform and Accountability Act of 1997: A U.S. law that restructured Amtrak’s oversight and sought to prepare it for financial self-sufficiency. It reflects recurring congressional attempts to change Amtrak’s finances and governance.
Freight rail transport in the United States: The movement of goods by rail across the United States. Freight railroads own much of the track Amtrak uses, but carry goods rather than passengers.
