Amur

The Amur is a major East Asian river formed by the Shilka and Argun rivers. It flows along parts of the Russia–China border and reaches the Sea of Okhotsk through the Amur Liman.

Shilka River: A river in eastern Siberia that joins the Argun River to form the Amur. The Shilka is one of the two rivers whose confluence begins the Amur.
Blagoveshchensk: A Russian city on the Amur opposite the Chinese city of Heihe. The paired cities use the river as a border and a cross-border transport corridor.
Nivkh people: An Indigenous people of the lower Amur region and Sakhalin Island. Nivkh communities have long inhabited the river’s lower reaches.
2008 China–Russia flood: A severe flood in the Amur basin that affected communities in Russia and China in 2008. The event shows how floods cross national boundaries within the river system.
Amur–Heilong River basin: The transboundary drainage system formed by the Amur River and its tributaries, known in China as Heilong Jiang. The river is the basin’s main channel and the center of its cross-border watershed.
Argun River: A river flowing through northeastern China and along the Russia–China border before joining the Shilka. Its meeting with the Shilka marks the Amur’s source.
Heihe: A Chinese city on the Amur opposite the Russian city of Blagoveshchensk. Its position links Chinese settlement and commerce directly to the river.
Manchu people: A Tungusic people whose historical homeland includes the Amur region of northeastern Asia. Manchu history is closely connected to the riverlands that became part of Qing China.
Heixiazi Island: An island at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, divided between China and Russia. Its partition illustrates how river islands can become consequential border territory.
Amur leopard: A critically endangered leopard subspecies surviving mainly in the Russian Far East and northeastern China. Its recovery depends partly on connected habitats across the Amur region.
