Knowra Amygdala Amygdala The amygdala is a pair of neuron clusters deep in the temporal lobes. It helps process emotionally significant cues, form emotional memories, and coordinate responses to potential threats.
Basolateral amygdala : A group of amygdala nuclei that integrates sensory information and supports emotional learning. It links cues with outcomes during fear and reward learning.
Amygdala nuclei : Distinct anatomical subdivisions of the amygdala with different patterns of connections and functions. The amygdala is a network of specialized nuclei, not a single uniform center.
Heinrich Klüver : An American psychologist known for research on visual behavior and temporal-lobe function in monkeys. His work with Paul Bucy linked temporal-lobe damage to changes in emotional behavior.
Post-traumatic stress disorder : A mental disorder involving persistent symptoms after exposure to traumatic events, including intrusive memories and heightened arousal. Altered threat learning and amygdala reactivity are studied in PTSD.
Hippocampus : A medial temporal brain structure essential for forming and retrieving many kinds of declarative and spatial memories. Unlike the amygdala’s emotional learning role, it is especially associated with contextual and episodic memory.
Central amygdala : A group of amygdala nuclei that helps organize behavioral and physiological responses to salient cues. Its outputs help produce freezing, autonomic changes, and other defensive responses.
Temporal lobe : A cerebral lobe involved in functions including hearing, memory, language, and visual recognition. The amygdala lies deep within the medial temporal region.
Paul Bucy : An American neurosurgeon who studied behavioral changes following temporal-lobe lesions in monkeys. The Klüver–Bucy syndrome bears his name and helped shape early ideas about amygdala function.
Specific phobia : An anxiety disorder marked by persistent, disproportionate fear of a particular object or situation. Phobias provide a clinical setting for studying learned threat responses.
Prefrontal cortex : The anterior region of the cerebral cortex, involved in planning, decision-making, and regulation of behavior. Prefrontal regions can regulate amygdala responses rather than simply detect emotional cues.
