An Essay on the Principle of Population

Thomas Robert Malthus’s 1798 work argues that population tends to grow faster than food supply, creating pressures checked by famine, disease, and other restraints.

Malthusian growth model: A model in which population grows exponentially while resources grow more slowly, producing recurring limits on living standards. It formalizes the essay’s central mismatch between population growth and food production.
Thomas Robert Malthus: An English cleric and political economist whose writings on population shaped debates about poverty and political economy. He wrote the essay and repeatedly revised its argument.
