Anadyr Highlands

The Anadyr Highlands are an upland region of northeastern Siberia extending across much of Russia’s Chukotka Peninsula, between the Arctic and Pacific watersheds.

Chukotka Peninsula: A peninsula in Russia’s far northeast between the Arctic Ocean and the Bering Sea. The highlands occupy much of this peninsula and shape its interior terrain.
Watershed: An area of land whose water drains to a shared outlet. Ridges in the highlands divide rivers flowing toward Arctic and Pacific waters.
Chukchi Plateau: A broad upland region in northern Chukotka, Russia. It provides a northern comparison for the more extensive Anadyr uplands.
Anadyr: A port city in northeastern Russia, at the mouth of the Anadyr River. The regional capital lies downstream from the highlands on their principal river.
Anadyr River: A major river of northeastern Siberia flowing east into the Bering Sea. Its basin drains much of the highlands toward the Bering Sea.
Permafrost: Ground that remains at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years. Frozen ground limits drainage and influences streams across the highlands.
Chukotka Mountain Range: A mountain range in northeastern Chukotka, Russia. Its high relief contrasts with the broader upland character of the Anadyr region.
Chukotka Autonomous Okrug: A federal subject of Russia occupying the far northeastern edge of Asia. The highlands lie within this administrative region, which governs land use and infrastructure.
Koryak Highlands: A mountainous region in northeastern Russia, south of the Anadyr Highlands. This neighboring upland system continues the region’s rugged terrain southward.
Tundra: A cold biome with low-growing vegetation and little or no tree cover. Its short growing season and sparse vegetation characterize much of the upland landscape.
