Anaphase

Anaphase is the stage of cell division when separated chromosomes move toward opposite poles. In mitosis, sister chromatids separate; in meiosis, homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids separate, depending on the division.

Cohesin: A protein complex that holds sister chromatids together until their separation. Its cleavage releases sister chromatids at the start of mitotic anaphase.
Cell cycle: The sequence of growth, DNA replication, and division through which a cell reproduces. Anaphase is one stage within the cell cycle's division phase.
Metaphase: The cell-division stage in which chromosomes align near the cell's equator. Chromosomes transition from metaphase alignment to anaphase separation.
Anaphase I: The stage of meiosis I when homologous chromosomes move to opposite poles. It demonstrates chromosome separation without splitting sister chromatids.
Separase: A protease that cleaves cohesin to permit chromosome separation. Separase activation triggers sister-chromatid separation in mitosis.
Mitosis: Nuclear division that usually produces two daughter nuclei with matching chromosome sets. Mitotic anaphase separates sister chromatids into the two forming nuclei.
Telophase: The cell-division stage in which separated chromosome sets arrive at opposite poles and new nuclei form. It follows anaphase as chromosome movement gives way to nuclear reassembly.
Anaphase II: The stage of meiosis II when sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles. It resembles mitotic anaphase but occurs in haploid cells.
Spindle assembly checkpoint: A surveillance system that delays anaphase until chromosomes are properly attached to spindle microtubules. It restrains anaphase onset when chromosome attachments remain faulty.
Meiosis: A two-stage cell division that produces haploid cells from a diploid cell. Its first and second divisions separate different chromosome partners during anaphase.
