Knowra Anasarca Anasarca Anasarca is severe, generalized edema caused by widespread accumulation of fluid in the body's tissues. It often reflects an underlying disorder affecting the heart, kidneys, liver, or blood proteins.
Edema : Edema is excess fluid accumulated in the interstitial spaces of tissues. Anasarca is the severe, generalized form of this broader condition.
Physical examination : A physical examination is the assessment of bodily signs through inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation. Examination can map swelling and reveal clues such as ascites or raised venous pressure.
Ascites : Ascites is an abnormal accumulation of fluid within the peritoneal cavity. It can accompany anasarca, especially when liver disease or severe systemic fluid retention is present.
Localized edema : Localized edema is excess fluid confined mainly to a particular body region or tissue. Anasarca differs by involving widespread, generalized swelling rather than one limited area.
Starling equation : The Starling equation describes fluid movement across capillary walls in terms of hydrostatic and oncotic pressures. Its pressure balance helps explain how fluid leaves blood vessels and enters tissues.
Urinalysis : Urinalysis is the laboratory examination of urine for physical, chemical, and microscopic findings. Protein in urine can point to kidney disease causing generalized edema.
Pleural effusion : Pleural effusion is excess fluid in the space between the lung and chest wall. It may occur alongside generalized tissue edema in systemic illness.
Angioedema : Angioedema is sudden swelling in deeper skin or mucosal tissues, often associated with allergic or medication-related pathways. Its acute, often focal pattern differs from the sustained generalized fluid accumulation of anasarca.
Hypoalbuminemia : Hypoalbuminemia is an abnormally low concentration of albumin in the blood. Low albumin reduces plasma oncotic pressure, encouraging widespread fluid leakage into tissues.
Serum albumin : Serum albumin is the concentration of the major circulating protein albumin in blood. A low result helps identify reduced oncotic pressure as a contributor to anasarca.
