Anatol Rapoport

Anatol Rapoport (1911–2007) was a mathematician, psychologist, and peace researcher whose work connected game theory, systems analysis, and the study of conflict.

Ludwig von Bertalanffy: An Austrian biologist who developed general systems theory as a framework for understanding organized wholes. Rapoport helped develop systems theory alongside Bertalanffy and applied it to social conflict.
Game theory: The mathematical study of strategic situations in which outcomes depend on multiple decision-makers’ choices. It supplied formal tools for Rapoport’s analyses of conflict, cooperation, and decision-making.
Peace research: The interdisciplinary study of the causes of war, conditions for peace, and ways to prevent or resolve conflict. Rapoport helped establish peace research as a systematic field of inquiry.

University of Chicago: A private research university in Chicago, Illinois, founded in 1890. Rapoport studied mathematics there and earned his doctorate in 1941.
Thomas Schelling: An American economist who analyzed bargaining, deterrence, and strategic conflict using game theory. Schelling’s strategic analysis offers a prominent counterpart to Rapoport’s emphasis on cooperation and conflict resolution.
Tit for Tat: A strategy in repeated games that cooperates first and then copies the other player’s previous move. Rapoport submitted this simple cooperative strategy to Axelrod’s computer tournaments.
