Anatolian Plate

The Anatolian Plate is a small tectonic plate carrying most of Turkey and adjoining regions. It moves generally westward as Arabia pushes north into Eurasia.

North Anatolian Fault: A major right-lateral strike-slip fault running across northern Turkey. This boundary accommodates much of the plate’s westward motion against Eurasia.
Strike-slip fault: A fault along which blocks of crust move mainly horizontally past one another. Both major Anatolian boundary faults are strike-slip faults.
Tethys Ocean: A system of ancient oceans that once lay between Gondwana and Laurasia. Tethyan ocean closure preceded the collisions that shaped Anatolia’s plate boundaries.
1999 İzmit earthquake: A magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck northwestern Turkey on 17 August 1999. It ruptured the North Anatolian Fault and exposed the hazards of rapid plate-boundary slip.
Slab pull: A force produced as dense, sinking oceanic lithosphere pulls the rest of a tectonic plate. It may help explain regional motion, but differs from Arabia-driven extrusion.
East Anatolian Fault: A major left-lateral strike-slip fault in eastern Turkey. It marks the plate’s southeastern boundary and helps channel westward escape.
Transform boundary: A plate boundary where plates slide horizontally past one another. Transform-like motion characterizes the Anatolian Plate’s long northern and eastern boundaries.
Neotethys: An oceanic branch of the Tethys system that separated parts of Gondwana from Eurasia. Its consumption and closure helped bring Arabia into collision with Eurasia.
2023 Turkey–Syria earthquakes: A sequence of major earthquakes on 6 February 2023 in southern Turkey and northern Syria. Rupture of the East Anatolian Fault demonstrated the seismic risk along the plate’s eastern boundary.
Gravitational potential energy: Energy stored in variations in elevation and crustal thickness that can drive lateral flow. This force offers an alternative contribution to Anatolian escape from collision.
