Anatolian Plateau

The Anatolian Plateau is a highland region occupying most of Turkey’s Asian landmass, bounded by mountain ranges and shaped by tectonic uplift.

Anatolia: The westernmost peninsula of Asia, comprising most of modern Turkey. The plateau occupies much of Anatolia’s interior.
Anatolian Plate: A small tectonic plate carrying most of Turkey between the Eurasian, Arabian, and African plates. Its motion is central to uplift and deformation across the region.
Anatolian steppe: A semi-arid grassland and shrubland ecosystem covering much of inland Anatolia. It is the plateau’s characteristic natural vegetation.
Erciyes: A dormant stratovolcano near Kayseri in central Turkey, rising to 3,917 meters. It is a prominent volcanic summit on the central plateau.
Pontic Mountains: A mountain system extending along the southern coast of the Black Sea in northern Turkey. They form much of the plateau’s northern boundary.
Arabian Plate: A tectonic plate moving northward toward Eurasia beneath the Middle East. Its collision with Eurasia helps drive eastern Anatolia’s uplift.
Konya Plain: A broad, low-lying plain in south-central Turkey and the country’s largest agricultural basin. Its farming and water use show the pressures on plateau landscapes.
Hasan Dağı: A stratovolcano in central Turkey, west of the Cappadocian volcanic region. Its isolated massif illustrates the plateau’s volcanic relief.
Taurus Mountains: A mountain system running across southern Turkey, parallel to the Mediterranean coast. Their northern slopes rise from the plateau’s southern edge.
North Anatolian Fault: A major right-lateral strike-slip fault crossing northern Turkey. It marks the plateau’s northern tectonic boundary and accommodates westward motion.
