Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is a state in southeastern India, on the Bay of Bengal. Telugu is its principal official language, and Amaravati is its capital.

Telugu language: A Dravidian language spoken chiefly in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Telugu is the state’s principal official language and a major marker of regional identity.
Andhra State: A state formed in 1953 from Telugu-speaking districts separated from Madras State. It was the first state created in India on a linguistic basis and preceded Andhra Pradesh.
Godavari Delta: The fertile river delta where the Godavari enters the Bay of Bengal in Andhra Pradesh. Its irrigated fields make the delta one of the state’s major agricultural regions.
Telugu Desam Party: An Indian political party founded in 1982 by actor N. T. Rama Rao in Andhra Pradesh. The party has repeatedly shaped state politics and articulated Telugu regional interests.

States Reorganisation Act, 1956: An Indian law that reorganized state boundaries, largely along linguistic lines, in 1956. It merged Andhra State with Telugu-speaking areas of Hyderabad State to create Andhra Pradesh.
Krishna Delta: The fertile river delta formed where the Krishna River meets the Bay of Bengal. Its canal-irrigated farmland has long supported rice cultivation and dense settlement.
Polavaram Project: A multipurpose dam and irrigation project on the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh. Its promised water and power benefits are tied to disputes over displacement and inter-state impacts.
Tamil Nadu: A state in southern India where Tamil is the principal official language. Andhra State emerged from Madras State, whose political center and language politics were strongly Tamil.
