Andreas Vesalius

Andreas Vesalius (1514–1564) was a physician and anatomist whose dissections and illustrated writings challenged inherited anatomical claims and made direct observation central to the study of the human body.

De humani corporis fabrica: A richly illustrated anatomy book published by Vesalius in 1543, based on human dissection and observation. This landmark work carried Vesalius’s anatomical method and findings to European scholars.
Comparative anatomy: The study of similarities and differences in the anatomical structures of different organisms. Comparing human bodies with animals helped Vesalius identify errors in animal-based anatomical accounts.
University of Padua: An Italian university founded in 1222, known for its medical school and scientific scholarship. Vesalius taught anatomy there and carried out the work behind his most influential book.
Gabriele Falloppio: An Italian anatomist who succeeded Vesalius as professor of anatomy at the University of Padua. Falloppio extended anatomical research at Padua and corresponded with Vesalius about his findings.

Realdo Colombo: An Italian physician and anatomist who taught at Padua and later published De re anatomica. Colombo’s work followed Vesalius’s teaching lineage while advancing anatomical claims of its own.
Mandible: The lower jawbone, which holds the lower teeth and moves during chewing and speech. Vesalius corrected Galen’s description of the human lower jaw as composed of two bones.
