Andrei Tupolev

Andrei Tupolev (1888–1972) was a Soviet aircraft designer who founded the Tupolev design bureau and led the development of influential military and civilian aircraft.

Tupolev Design Bureau: A Soviet and Russian aircraft-design organization founded by Andrei Tupolev in 1922. Tupolev established this bureau and led its work for decades.
Tupolev Tu-16: A Soviet jet-powered strategic bomber that first flew in 1952. The Tu-16 became one of Tupolev’s major postwar military designs.
Aleksey Tupolev: A Soviet aircraft designer and Andrei Tupolev’s son, who later led the Tupolev design bureau. He carried the bureau’s leadership into the postwar and later Soviet periods.
Sharashka: An informal name for a Soviet prison research laboratory staffed by imprisoned engineers and scientists. Tupolev designed aircraft while imprisoned in one of these institutions.
