Anekantavada

Anekantavada is the Jain doctrine that reality has many aspects and cannot be fully described from one viewpoint. It underpins Jain approaches to knowledge, language, and debate.

Syadvada: A Jain theory of conditional predication that qualifies statements according to the standpoint from which they are made. It expresses anekantavada through qualified claims rather than unconditioned assertions.
Jain logic: The logical traditions developed in Jain philosophy, including theories of standpoint and conditional predication. Anekantavada informs Jain methods for evaluating claims that describe reality partially.
Mahavira: The twenty-fourth Tirthankara of Jainism, traditionally dated to the sixth century BCE. Jain tradition presents his teachings as a foundation for doctrines of many-sided reality.
Relativism: The view that truth or knowledge depends on a framework, perspective, or context. Anekantavada allows partial claims but does not reduce reality to arbitrary perspectives.
Nayavada: A Jain account of partial standpoints, each of which describes one aspect of an object. It explains how limited viewpoints can be valid without capturing the whole.
Saptabhangi: The Jain scheme of seven conditional predications used to analyze an object's describability. It applies conditional predication to a structured set of possible judgments.
Jain Agamas: The canonical scriptures of Jainism, preserved in distinct Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions. Jain scriptural teachings provide early settings for discussions of viewpoints and qualified claims.
Skepticism: The philosophical position that questions whether knowledge or certainty is attainable. Anekantavada limits individual claims while affirming that knowledge of aspects is possible.
Jain epistemology: The Jain account of knowledge, its sources, and its limits. Anekantavada belongs to a wider theory of how beings know reality.
Syat: A Sanskrit term meaning “in some respect” or “from a certain standpoint” in Jain conditional statements. This qualifier marks the standpoint that prevents a claim from being treated as absolute.
