Anglerfish

Anglerfish are predatory fishes whose first dorsal-fin spine is modified into a lure. Many species inhabit the deep sea, where some use bioluminescent lures and reproduce through extreme sexual specialization.

Illicium: The modified first dorsal-fin spine of an anglerfish, which forms the stalk supporting its lure. This spine is the structural basis of the anglerfish’s characteristic baiting apparatus.
Lophiiformes: An order of ray-finned fishes characterized by specialized structures for luring or capturing prey. Anglerfish belong to this broader order, which includes both deep-sea and shallow-water forms.
