Angra Mainyu

Angra Mainyu is the destructive spirit opposing goodness and truth in Zoroastrian tradition. In later Zoroastrian texts, he is identified with Ahriman and opposed to Ohrmazd.

Zoroastrianism: An Iranian religion centered on Ahura Mazda and teachings associated with Zarathustra. Angra Mainyu belongs to this religion’s account of cosmic conflict.
Avesta: The collection of sacred texts of Zoroastrianism, composed and transmitted in Avestan. Its oldest hymns contain the earliest surviving references to the spirit.
Zurvanism: A Zoroastrian religious current that treats Zurvan, infinite time, as the source of Ohrmazd and Ahriman. Its account makes the opposing spirits brothers rather than independent adversaries.
Ahriman: The Middle Persian name for the destructive spirit opposing Ohrmazd in Zoroastrian tradition. Ahriman is the later form through which Angra Mainyu became widely known.
Asha: Avestan concept encompassing truth, order, and rightness. Angra Mainyu opposes the truth and order that asha names.
Gathas: Seventeen hymns attributed to Zarathustra and preserved within the Avesta. Their enigmatic account of two spirits underlies later interpretations of Angra Mainyu.
Frashokereti: The final renovation of existence in Zoroastrian eschatology, when evil is overcome and creation is renewed. The cosmic opposition ends with the destruction of evil and restoration of creation.
Dualism: A worldview organized around two opposed principles or forces. Angra Mainyu is central to debates about whether Zoroastrianism is cosmically dualist.
Druj: Avestan concept of falsehood, disorder, and deception opposed to asha. Druj expresses the falsehood and disorder associated with Angra Mainyu.
Yasna: The principal Zoroastrian liturgical text, including the Gathas. Its passages preserve key descriptions of the opposing spirits.
