Animal training

Animal training is the process of teaching animals behaviors or responses through experience, including reinforcement, habituation, and conditioning.

Operant conditioning: Learning in which behavior changes because of its consequences. Its reinforcement and punishment principles underpin much behavior training.
Clicker training: A training method that uses a distinct marker sound to identify behavior followed by reinforcement. The click precisely marks the action being rewarded.
Punishment (psychology): A consequence that reduces a behavior by adding an aversive stimulus or removing a valued one. It can suppress behavior, unlike reinforcement, which increases behavior.
Animal behavior: The actions and responses of animals in relation to their environments and other organisms. Training works by observing and influencing this broader range of behavior.
Human–animal interaction: The reciprocal relationships and interactions between people and other animals. Training is one structured form of this wider relationship.
Classical conditioning: Learning in which a stimulus comes to predict another stimulus and elicit a response. Training can pair cues with outcomes so animals respond to signals.
Guide dog: A dog trained to help a person with visual impairment navigate obstacles and routes. Guide-dog preparation applies learned cues and carefully selected responses to mobility.
Flooding (psychology): An exposure technique that presents a feared stimulus intensely without escape until fear declines. Unlike gradual training, flooding relies on prolonged exposure and can cause distress.
Ethology: The scientific study of animal behavior, especially in natural settings. Species-typical behavior helps distinguish trainable responses from unmet needs.
Animal-assisted therapy: A goal-directed intervention that incorporates animals to support human health or well-being. Trained animal behaviors can help make therapeutic interactions safe and predictable.
