Animation

Animation creates the appearance of movement by displaying a sequence of individually made images, or frames, over time.

Frame rate: The number of images displayed or recorded per second in a moving-image sequence. Frame rate sets how many animation images appear each second and shapes perceived smoothness.
Traditional animation: Animation made by creating images individually, commonly as drawings on paper or cels. It is the hand-drawn frame-by-frame method that established many familiar animation practices.
Animated film: A motion picture whose moving images are created primarily through animation. Feature and short films use animation as a complete visual storytelling medium.
Phenakistiscope: A nineteenth-century optical toy that creates an apparent moving image from sequential drawings on a spinning disc. It demonstrated how repeated viewing of drawn phases could produce apparent motion.
Live-action film: A motion picture made primarily by recording real people, places, or events with a camera. It records photographed action, whereas animation constructs the images that depict movement.
Persistence of vision: The continued perception of an image for a brief time after its stimulus disappears. It is often invoked to explain why rapidly displayed frames appear continuous, though perception involves more than this effect.
Stop motion: Animation made by photographing physical objects in successive poses. Each frame records a small change to a real object rather than a newly drawn scene.
Television animation: Animated programs produced for television or television-linked distribution. Series adapt animation to episodic storytelling and recurring production schedules.
Zoetrope: A rotating cylinder with slits that displays a sequence of images as apparent movement. Its slotted viewing method made animated image sequences visible to multiple viewers.
Motion graphics: Animated graphic elements, typography, and visual forms used to communicate or decorate. It overlaps with animation but often emphasizes designed information rather than character or story.
