Anna Pavlova

Anna Pavlova (1881–1931) was a Russian ballerina whose international touring helped popularize ballet in the early twentieth century. She was especially associated with the solo “The Dying Swan.”

Marius Petipa: A French ballet choreographer and teacher who became a leading figure of imperial Russian ballet. Petipa choreographed roles Pavlova danced at the Mariinsky Theatre, including in The Pharaoh’s Daughter.
The Dying Swan: A short solo ballet in which a swan’s final struggle is expressed through movement. Pavlova made this solo her most celebrated performance; Fokine created it for her in 1905.
Imperial Ballet School: A St. Petersburg institution that trained dancers for Russia’s imperial ballet. Pavlova entered the school as a child and received the classical training behind her career.

Michel Fokine: A Russian choreographer who sought expressive, integrated forms of ballet in the early twentieth century. Fokine choreographed Pavlova’s signature solo, The Dying Swan.
The Pharaoh’s Daughter: A ballet by Marius Petipa in which an Englishman dreams of ancient Egypt after taking opium. Pavlova’s debut role at the Mariinsky was in this Petipa ballet.
