Knowra Annealing Annealing Annealing is a heat treatment in which a material is heated and then cooled under controlled conditions to soften it, relieve internal stresses, or improve its structure.
Recovery (materials science) : A heat-activated reduction of defects and internal stresses in a deformed material, usually with little change in grain shape. It can relieve stored stress during annealing before substantial grain restructuring occurs.
Steel : An iron-based alloy containing carbon, often with additional alloying elements. Steel annealing changes its phases and hardness to suit forming or machining.
Quenching : Rapid cooling from an elevated temperature, used to preserve phases or produce hard microstructures in some materials. Unlike controlled slow cooling in many anneals, quenching suppresses some transformations and can harden steel.
Crystal defect : A deviation from the regular atomic arrangement of a crystal, including vacancies, dislocations, and grain boundaries. Annealing changes the number and arrangement of defects that store energy in deformed materials.
Annealing (metallurgy) : The application of controlled heating and cooling to metals to alter their mechanical properties or microstructure. Metallurgical annealing is the traditional and most common technical use of the term.
Recrystallization (materials science) : The formation of new, relatively strain-free grains in a plastically deformed material. It replaces deformed grains and often restores ductility during annealing.
Copper : A ductile, electrically conductive metallic element with the chemical symbol Cu. Annealing restores copper’s ductility after it has been hardened by deformation.
Tempering (metallurgy) : A heat treatment applied to previously hardened steel to reduce brittleness and adjust its strength and toughness. Tempering starts from a quenched, hardened condition; annealing generally aims for a softer condition.
Dislocation : A line defect in a crystal lattice that enables plastic deformation under applied stress. Deformation multiplies dislocations; their rearrangement or removal helps soften a material during annealing.
Bronze Age : A period in which bronze became a major material for tools, weapons, and other objects. Ancient metalworkers used heating and cooling practices that softened worked copper alloys.
