Annie Besant

Annie Besant (1847–1933) was a British socialist, women’s rights activist, Theosophist, and supporter of Indian self-rule. She led the Theosophical Society and became a prominent figure in India’s Home Rule movement.

Charles Bradlaugh: Charles Bradlaugh was a British secularist, political activist, and member of Parliament who campaigned for freedom of conscience. Besant worked with Bradlaugh on secularist publishing and the campaign for birth control.
National Secular Society: The National Secular Society is a British organization founded in 1866 to promote secularism and freedom of conscience. Besant became a leading speaker and writer in the society during her secularist years.

Banaras Hindu University: Banaras Hindu University is a public research university in Varanasi, India, founded in 1916. Besant’s Central Hindu College became a constituent part of the university.
Mohandas K. Gandhi: Mohandas K. Gandhi was an Indian nationalist leader who developed nonviolent mass resistance against British rule. Gandhi’s mass civil disobedience later displaced the constitutional Home Rule strategy Besant had promoted.
