Ant colony

An ant colony is a social group living together in a nest, where queens, workers, and sometimes males cooperate in reproduction, brood care, foraging, and defense.

Ant pheromone: A chemical signal produced by ants that changes the behavior of other ants. Pheromone trails let foragers recruit nestmates to food without centralized direction.
Queen ant: A reproductive female ant that lays eggs and may found or sustain a colony. Egg production makes the queen central to colony growth, though workers often maintain her care.
Ant colony optimization algorithm: A metaheuristic that uses simulated pheromone trails to find good solutions to combinatorial problems. It translates decentralized trail-following into a practical search procedure.
Army ant: A nomadic ant specialized for collective predation, often forming large raiding columns. Army ants show how colonies can replace a permanent nest with coordinated movement and temporary bivouacs.
Ant–plant mutualism: An interaction in which ants and plants exchange services, such as plant shelter or food for ant defense. Some colonies protect plants from herbivores in return for nectar or nesting sites.
