Antarctic Convergence

The Antarctic Convergence is a shifting oceanographic boundary where cold Antarctic surface waters meet warmer subantarctic waters. It is marked by a sharp change in water temperature and helps define the Southern Ocean’s northern limit.

Antarctic Circumpolar Current: The eastward-flowing current encircling Antarctica, driven by strong westerly winds and unimpeded by continental barriers. Its fronts organize the flow and water-mass contrasts around the convergence.
Southern Ocean ecosystem: The network of organisms and ecological processes in the waters surrounding Antarctica. The convergence separates water masses with distinct ecological conditions.
James Cook: A British naval officer and explorer who led major Pacific voyages, including a circumnavigation of Antarctica in the 1770s. Cook’s voyages helped document the cold Antarctic waters encountered south of the convergence.
