Antarctic exploration

Antarctic exploration is the history of expeditions that investigated Antarctica and its surrounding waters, from early voyages to modern scientific fieldwork.

Terra Nova Expedition: Robert Falcon Scott’s 1910–1913 British expedition to Antarctica, which reached the South Pole and ended with Scott’s death on the return journey. Its South Pole party became the best-known tragedy of the Heroic Age.
Antarctic sea ice: Sea ice formed by freezing seawater around Antarctica, expanding and retreating markedly with the seasons. Its seasonal movement controlled access to coasts and trapped ships such as Endurance.
James Cook's second voyage: James Cook’s 1772–1775 Pacific voyage, which crossed the Antarctic Circle and circumnavigated the Southern Ocean. Cook’s voyage established that any southern continent lay beyond formidable sea ice.
Roald Amundsen: A Norwegian polar explorer who led the first successful expedition to the South Pole in 1911. His route and travel methods made the first South Pole arrival possible.
Antarctic Treaty System: The network of agreements governing Antarctica, centered on the 1959 Antarctic Treaty and its peaceful, scientific framework. Postwar exploration helped prompt a treaty that set aside territorial disputes and protected research cooperation.
Amundsen's South Pole expedition: Roald Amundsen’s 1910–1912 expedition that reached the South Pole on 14 December 1911 and returned safely. Its efficient route and survival contrasted sharply with Scott’s expedition.
Polar ship: A vessel designed or adapted to operate in polar waters, often with reinforced hulls and cold-weather equipment. Ship design set the limits of early coastal exploration and ocean access.
Bellingshausen–Lazarev expedition: A Russian naval expedition of 1819–1821 that circumnavigated Antarctica and reported seeing its ice-covered coast. It is among the earliest documented sightings of the Antarctic continent.
Robert Falcon Scott: A British naval officer and Antarctic explorer who led the Discovery and Terra Nova expeditions. His expeditions combined geographic ambition with influential scientific programs.
Antarctic research station: A facility in Antarctica used to support scientific research, logistics, and year-round or seasonal fieldwork. Permanent stations replaced many temporary expedition camps as the basis for sustained research.
