Knowra Antarctic Plate Antarctic Plate The Antarctic Plate is a major tectonic plate underlying Antarctica and much of the surrounding Southern Ocean. Its boundaries are mostly mid-ocean ridges and transform faults.
Antarctic–Pacific Ridge : A divergent plate boundary in the Southern Ocean where the Antarctic and Pacific plates move apart and new oceanic crust forms. This spreading ridge marks a major boundary between the Antarctic and Pacific plates.
Gondwana : An ancient supercontinent that included Antarctica, South America, Africa, Australia, the Indian subcontinent, and other landmasses. The Antarctic Plate inherited its continental foundation from Gondwana’s southern landmass.
Tectonic plate : A large, rigid section of Earth’s lithosphere that moves over the underlying asthenosphere. The Antarctic Plate is one example of this kind of lithospheric unit.
Plate reconstruction : A model of past tectonic plate positions and motions derived from geological and geophysical evidence. Reconstructions use Antarctic margins to track Gondwana’s breakup and ocean-basin development.
Pacific Plate : The largest tectonic plate, underlying most of the Pacific Ocean and adjoining regions. Its relative motion against the Antarctic Plate is expressed along the Pacific–Antarctic Ridge.
Southwest Indian Ridge : A mid-ocean ridge separating the Antarctic Plate from the African Plate in the southern Indian Ocean. Seafloor spreading here forms the Antarctic Plate’s boundary with the African Plate.
Gondwana breakup : The prolonged geological process that fragmented Gondwana and separated its constituent landmasses. Rifting during Gondwana’s breakup helped establish the plate boundaries around Antarctica.
Lithosphere : Earth’s rigid outer shell, comprising the crust and the uppermost mantle. The Antarctic Plate consists of lithosphere moving as a coherent unit.
Southern Ocean : The ocean surrounding Antarctica, connecting the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. Its seafloor and circulation are shaped by boundaries of the Antarctic Plate.
Australian Plate : A major tectonic plate underlying Australia and much of the Indian Ocean’s eastern region. It borders the Antarctic Plate across the Southeast Indian Ridge.
