Anti-authoritarianism

Anti-authoritarianism is a political stance opposing concentrated, coercive, or unaccountable power. It favors limits on authority and forms of social and political organization that preserve individual autonomy.

Authoritarianism: A political system or disposition that concentrates power and restricts political freedom and pluralism. It names the concentrated, coercive power that anti-authoritarianism opposes.
Anarchism: A political philosophy that rejects the state and seeks social organization without coercive hierarchy. Anarchism is a radical anti-authoritarian tradition, but anti-authoritarianism does not always reject the state.
Enlightenment: An intellectual movement emphasizing reason, individual rights, and criticism of inherited authority. Its critiques of absolute rule helped shape modern arguments for limiting political power.
Direct democracy: A system in which people make political decisions themselves rather than solely through elected representatives. It reduces the distance between decision-makers and those subject to decisions.
Paris Commune: A radical municipal government that ruled Paris from March to May 1871. Its elected, recallable officials inspired later experiments in popular self-government.
Political authority: The recognized right to make and enforce binding decisions in a political community. Anti-authoritarian arguments ask when political authority is legitimate and how it should be limited.
Liberalism: A political tradition emphasizing individual rights, constitutional government, and limits on state power. Liberalism shares opposition to unchecked government while generally preserving constitutional authority.
French Revolution: A political revolution beginning in 1789 that ended the French monarchy and reshaped European politics. Its challenges to monarchy and its later coercive turns exposed tensions within anti-authoritarian change.
Workers' self-management: An approach in which workers collectively govern their workplace and its production. It applies anti-hierarchical principles to control over work and economic decisions.
Spanish Revolution of 1936: A social revolution during the Spanish Civil War that collectivized workplaces and reorganized communities. Its anarchist and syndicalist projects tested anti-authoritarian organization on a large scale.
