Anti-Federalism

Anti-Federalism was a movement opposing or criticizing ratification of the proposed United States Constitution. Its advocates warned that the new national government could threaten state authority and individual liberties.

Patrick Henry: Patrick Henry was a Virginia statesman and orator who opposed ratification of the United States Constitution. His speeches at Virginia’s ratifying convention made the case against a powerful central government.
Articles of Confederation: The Articles of Confederation were the first constitution of the United States, in force from 1781 until 1789. They were the existing national framework that the proposed Constitution would replace.
State ratifying conventions: State ratifying conventions were special assemblies that debated and voted on whether to approve the United States Constitution. Anti-Federalists used these state-level votes to challenge ratification and propose conditions.
United States Bill of Rights: The United States Bill of Rights comprises the first ten amendments to the Constitution, ratified in 1791. Its adoption fulfilled a central demand raised by opponents during ratification.
George Mason: George Mason was an American statesman who helped draft Virginia’s Declaration of Rights and opposed the Constitution’s ratification. He refused to sign the Constitution and pressed for explicit protections of individual rights.
United States Constitution: The United States Constitution is the supreme law establishing the federal government and defining its powers. Its proposed distribution of authority was the central subject of Anti-Federalist criticism.
The Federalist Papers: The Federalist Papers are a collection of 85 essays advocating ratification of the United States Constitution. These essays answered many objections raised by Anti-Federalist writers.
Ninth Amendment to the United States Constitution: The Ninth Amendment states that listing certain rights in the Constitution does not deny or disparage other rights retained by the people. It addressed concerns that enumerating rights might imply that unlisted rights were unprotected.
Richard Henry Lee: Richard Henry Lee was a Virginia politician who served in the Continental Congress and opposed the proposed Constitution. His letters under the name “Federal Farmer” articulated objections to the new government.
Federalism: Federalism is a system that divides governing authority between a central government and constituent political units. Anti-Federalists disputed whether the Constitution preserved a safe balance between national and state authority.
