Anti-statism is opposition to the state’s authority, power, or role in social and political life. It ranges from limiting government to abolishing the state.

Anarchism: A political philosophy opposing involuntary hierarchy and advocating society without a state. Anarchism is the clearest tradition that extends opposition to state authority into opposition to the state itself.
Statism: The view that the state should play a substantial role in organizing society or the economy. Statism directly reverses anti-statism’s skepticism toward state power.
William Godwin: An English political philosopher whose 1793 work argued for reason, social improvement, and the eventual decline of government. Godwin gave an early systematic case against government as an unnecessary constraint on human improvement.
Civil disobedience: The deliberate, public breach of a law judged unjust, usually undertaken without violence. Civil disobedience challenges state commands while exposing the moral limits of legal authority.
Social contract: A political theory explaining legitimate government through actual or hypothetical agreement among people. Anti-statist arguments challenge whether consent can justify state authority over people who never agreed.
Libertarianism: A political philosophy that gives priority to individual liberty and limits on coercive power. Many libertarians oppose extensive state power while retaining some form of government.
Limited government: The principle that government authority should be restricted by law, institutions, or constitutional rules. It seeks restraints on government without necessarily opposing the state as an institution.
Pierre-Joseph Proudhon: A French socialist thinker associated with mutualism and the claim that property can constitute theft. Proudhon developed anti-state arguments alongside proposals for mutual exchange and federation.
Mutual aid: Cooperation through which people provide one another practical support and shared resources. Mutual aid demonstrates how communities can meet needs outside state provision.
Public goods: Goods that are difficult to exclude people from using and whose use does not substantially diminish others’ access. Their provision raises the question of how non-state institutions can coordinate shared needs.
