Antiaromaticity

Antiaromaticity is the destabilization of a cyclic, planar, fully conjugated molecule with 4n π electrons relative to comparable nonaromatic structures.

Hückel's rule: A rule predicting aromatic stabilization for planar, cyclic, fully conjugated systems with 4n + 2 π electrons. Its 4n + 2 electron count marks the aromatic counterpart to antiaromatic 4n systems.
Cyclic compound: A chemical compound whose atoms form one or more closed rings. A closed path is required for the cyclic electron interaction underlying antiaromaticity.
Cyclobutadiene: A four-carbon cyclic diene with four π electrons that is strongly antiaromatic when planar. It is the textbook 4π-electron example, stabilized structurally by bond alternation.
Aromaticity: The unusual stabilization of cyclic, planar, fully conjugated molecules with 4n + 2 π electrons. Aromaticity is the stabilization counterpart with the complementary electron count.
Molecular orbital theory: A model of chemical bonding in which electrons occupy orbitals extending across molecules. The degenerate frontier orbitals of 4n rings explain their unusual instability.
Conjugated system: A sequence of adjacent orbitals that permits π electrons to be delocalized across multiple atoms. Continuous orbital overlap lets π electrons circulate around the ring.
Cyclopentadienyl cation: A five-membered carbon ring with a positive charge and four π electrons. Its planar conjugated form satisfies the 4n count and exhibits antiaromatic character.
Nonaromaticity: The absence of significant aromatic or antiaromatic stabilization in a molecule. Nonaromatic structures provide the comparison baseline for defining antiaromatic destabilization.
Jahn–Teller effect: A distortion that lowers a molecule's symmetry and energy when degenerate electronic states are occupied unevenly. Distortion can split degenerate orbitals and relieve antiaromatic electronic instability.
Planarity (chemistry): A molecular geometry in which the relevant atoms lie in one plane. Planarity enables uninterrupted p-orbital overlap around an antiaromatic ring.
