Antibiotic era

The period in medicine shaped by widespread access to antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. It transformed infection care while selecting for bacteria resistant to these drugs.

Antimicrobial resistance: The ability of microorganisms to survive exposure to drugs that would normally inhibit or kill them. Widespread antibiotic use has selected resistant bacteria, weakening the era’s central medical gains.
Paul Ehrlich: A German physician and scientist whose work helped establish antimicrobial chemotherapy. His search for selective chemical treatments helped set the stage for antibiotics.
Bacterial cell wall: A rigid structure outside the bacterial cell membrane that maintains shape and protects the cell. Penicillin kills susceptible bacteria by disrupting construction of this structure.

Salvarsan: An arsenic-based drug introduced in 1910 to treat syphilis, among the first targeted antimicrobial chemotherapies. It showed that chemicals could selectively treat infections before the antibiotic era began.
Beta-lactam antibiotics: A class of antibiotics, including penicillins and cephalosporins, that inhibit bacterial cell-wall synthesis. This major drug family illustrates how antibiotics exploit structures absent from human cells.
Surgical site infection: An infection occurring in the incision or organ space after a surgical procedure. Antibiotics made surgery safer, while prevention and treatment remain central concerns.
Antibiotic discovery: The identification and development of substances that inhibit or kill bacteria. Renewing discovery is one response to resistance outpacing available drugs.
