Anticline

An anticline is a rock fold that arches upward, with its limbs dipping away from the crest. In an upright anticline, the oldest rocks typically lie at its center.

Folding (geology): The bending of originally planar rock layers into curved structures without breaking them throughout. An anticline is one geometry produced when rock layers fold.
Fold limb: A relatively planar segment of rock layers between adjacent fold hinges. The limbs dip away from the crest in a typical upright anticline.
Syncline: A fold whose limbs dip toward its hinge and whose youngest rocks typically occupy its center. It is the downward-arching counterpart to an anticline.
Structural trap: A geological arrangement that retains hydrocarbons by blocking their upward migration. An anticline can trap hydrocarbons beneath an impermeable cap rock.
Folding mechanism: The physical processes by which layered rocks bend, buckle, or flow under stress. These processes determine an anticline’s shape and internal strain.
Dip (geology): The angle and direction at which a planar geological surface inclines from horizontal. Opposing dip directions on either side help identify an anticline.
Antiform: An upward-convex fold defined by shape, without implying the ages of rocks at its center. Unlike anticline, antiform does not require older rocks at the core.
Petroleum geology: The study of the origin, migration, and accumulation of petroleum in Earth’s crust. Anticlines have been major targets in the search for conventional oil and gas.
Axial plane: An imaginary plane that divides a fold as symmetrically as possible through its hinge lines. Its orientation distinguishes upright, inclined, and overturned anticlines.
Strike (geology): The compass direction of a horizontal line on an inclined geological surface. Strike measurements help map the axes and limbs of anticlines.
