Antidote

An antidote is a substance or treatment that counteracts a poison or reduces its harmful effects, often by blocking its action, binding it, or supporting its removal.

Naloxone: A medication that rapidly reverses opioid-induced respiratory and central nervous system depression. It displaces opioids from receptors, making it a direct example of pharmacological antidote action.
Acetaminophen poisoning: Toxic injury caused by excessive acetaminophen exposure, especially to the liver. N-acetylcysteine is most effective when given early after this common overdose.
Toxicology: The study of harmful effects of chemicals and other agents on living organisms. Antidote selection depends on identifying the toxic agent and its effects.
Supportive care: Treatment that maintains vital functions and manages symptoms without directly removing the cause. When no antidote exists, supportive care may be the main treatment.
Fomepizole: A medication that inhibits alcohol dehydrogenase in methanol and ethylene glycol poisoning. Its effectiveness raises practical questions about timely access and treatment thresholds.
Atropine: A medication that blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors and treats several forms of poisoning. It counters excess acetylcholine signaling in organophosphate poisoning.
Opioid overdose: A medical emergency in which opioid exposure suppresses breathing and consciousness. Naloxone can reverse its life-threatening respiratory depression.
Poison: A substance that can cause illness, injury, or death through its chemical or biological effects. An antidote is defined by its capacity to counter a poison's harm.
Decontamination: Measures that remove or reduce a hazardous substance on or in the body. It limits exposure, whereas an antidote counteracts toxic effects after exposure.
Flumazenil: A benzodiazepine-receptor antagonist used to reverse selected benzodiazepine effects. Its seizure risk in some overdoses illustrates why reversal can be more dangerous than supportive care.
