Antihero

An antihero is a central character who lacks conventional heroic qualities, such as courage, morality, or selflessness, yet remains the focus of a story.

Protagonist: The principal character around whom a story’s action is organized. Antiheroes occupy the protagonist’s central role despite lacking conventional heroic qualities.
Hamlet: The prince of Denmark in William Shakespeare’s tragedy of the same name. His hesitation and inwardness complicate the decisive, action-oriented model of a hero.
Milesian tale: An ancient Greek form of short fiction known for erotic, comic, and morally uninhibited episodes. Its roguish protagonists offer an early precedent for entertaining central figures without heroic virtue.
Tragic hero: A protagonist of tragedy whose defining flaw or error contributes to a catastrophic downfall. A tragic hero’s fall follows a dramatic pattern that an antihero need not share.
Unlikable protagonist: A central character whose conduct or personality makes them difficult to admire or sympathize with. Antiheroes can challenge the expectation that a protagonist must be likable.
Hero: A character admired for courage, noble aims, or exceptional deeds. The antihero departs from the traits that make a traditional hero admirable.
Don Quixote: The deluded would-be knight who pursues chivalric adventures in Miguel de Cervantes’s novel. His foolishness and idealism make him a comic, flawed center of the narrative.
Picaresque novel: A prose narrative following a resourceful rogue through episodic adventures in a corrupt society. Its low-born, self-interested narrator helped establish the antihero as a literary protagonist.
Villain protagonist: A story’s central character whose aims or actions make them its villain. The category can overlap with antiheroism but foregrounds the character’s antagonistic role.
Audience alignment: The way a narrative connects an audience to a character’s perspective and actions. Antihero stories can grant close access to characters whose behavior remains morally troubling.
