Antimony trichloride

Antimony trichloride (SbCl₃) is a molecular antimony halide and Lewis acid. It is used as a chemical reagent and to produce other antimony compounds.

Antimony: Antimony is a brittle, silvery metalloid with atomic number 51. SbCl₃ is one of the compounds formed by antimony.

Antimony(III) compounds: Antimony(III) compounds contain antimony in the +3 oxidation state. Antimony has the +3 oxidation state in SbCl₃.
Carr-Price reaction: The Carr–Price reaction is a color test in which antimony trichloride produces blue complexes with vitamin A and related compounds. This classical assay uses SbCl₃ to detect vitamin A.
Antimony trihalides: Antimony trihalides are compounds in which antimony is bonded to three halogen atoms. SbCl₃ is the chlorine member of this compound family.
Arsenic trichloride: Arsenic trichloride (AsCl₃) is a toxic, molecular arsenic(III) chloride. AsCl₃ shares the trichloride pattern but uses the lighter group-15 element arsenic.
Lewis acid: A Lewis acid accepts an electron pair to form a chemical bond. SbCl₃ accepts electron pairs, accounting for much of its reactivity.
