Antiparasitic

An antiparasitic is a drug or treatment that kills parasites or inhibits their growth and reproduction. Antiparasitics include medicines directed against protozoa, helminths, and ectoparasites.

Antiprotozoal: A drug or treatment that kills protozoa or inhibits their growth. Targets single-celled parasites such as malaria parasites and Giardia.
Malaria: A mosquito-borne disease caused by Plasmodium parasites. Its treatment uses antiprotozoal drugs selected for parasite species and disease stage.
Parasitism: A biological interaction in which one organism lives on or in another and benefits at the host's expense. Antiparasitic treatment addresses this host–parasite relationship.
Antibiotic: A drug that kills bacteria or inhibits their growth. Antibiotics target bacteria, not parasitic worms or protozoa.
Anthelmintic: A drug that kills parasitic worms or expels them from the host. Acts against helminths through targets such as neuromuscular function or energy metabolism.
Giardiasis: An intestinal infection caused by the protozoan Giardia duodenalis. It is a common example of an infection treated with antiprotozoal medicines.
Protozoa: A diverse group of mostly single-celled eukaryotic organisms, including many parasites. Protozoan parasites require drugs distinct from those used against worms.
Antiviral drug: A medicine that interferes with viral replication or spread. Viruses require different treatment targets from parasitic organisms.
Ectoparasiticide: A substance that kills parasites living on the body's surface, such as lice or mites. Treats infestations on skin or hair rather than parasites inside the body.
Schistosomiasis: A disease caused by parasitic flatworms of the genus Schistosoma. Praziquantel is widely used to treat this helminth infection.
