Knowra Antonia Maury Antonia Maury Antonia Maury (1866–1952) was an American astronomer at Harvard College Observatory who developed a detailed system for classifying stellar spectra and identifying spectroscopic binaries.
Edward Charles Pickering : An American astronomer who directed Harvard College Observatory from 1877 to 1919 and organized its photographic stellar surveys. As observatory director, he hired Maury and oversaw the work that produced her classification.
Stellar spectroscopy : The study of stars through the wavelengths and patterns of their emitted or absorbed light. Maury classified the spectral patterns revealed by this method.
Harvard College Observatory : An astronomical research institution founded at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1839. Maury conducted her stellar spectroscopy and classification there.
Stellar spectral lines : Wavelength-specific features in a star’s spectrum produced by atoms and ions absorbing or emitting light. Maury’s close attention to line sharpness and structure made these features classification evidence.
Williamina Fleming : A Scottish-American astronomer who developed stellar classification methods while examining spectra at Harvard College Observatory. Her simpler spectral scheme preceded Maury’s more detailed treatment of stellar spectra.
Stellar classification : The grouping of stars by properties inferred from their spectra, especially temperature and luminosity. Maury’s system was a distinctive refinement of this broader practice.
Henry Draper : An American physician and astronomer who made pioneering photographs of stellar spectra in the 1870s. His photographic work helped launch the program at Harvard that later employed Maury.
Luminosity class : A category indicating a star’s luminosity and evolutionary state, commonly expressed with Roman numerals in spectral notation. Maury’s attention to spectral-line width anticipated the use of line features to distinguish luminosity classes.
Annie Jump Cannon : An American astronomer whose Harvard spectral classification arranged stars into the O, B, A, F, G, K, M sequence. Cannon favored a streamlined classification, unlike Maury’s finer distinctions and luminosity criteria.
Harvard spectral classification : A system for grouping stars by spectral features, developed at Harvard College Observatory from photographic spectra. Maury’s scheme was one influential version within the observatory’s evolving classification work.
