Antonine Plague

The Antonine Plague was a devastating epidemic that spread through the Roman Empire from about 165 CE, during the reigns of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. Its cause is uncertain, though smallpox is a leading hypothesis.

Smallpox: A contagious viral disease caused by variola viruses, eradicated worldwide in 1980. It is the leading proposed cause, though surviving descriptions cannot establish the diagnosis.
Marcus Aurelius: Roman emperor from 161 to 180 CE and a Stoic philosopher known for Meditations. The epidemic unfolded during his reign and became associated with the Antonine dynasty.
Smallpox transmission: The spread of variola viruses, chiefly through close contact and infectious respiratory particles. This proposed pathway could explain rapid spread through crowded settlements and moving armies.
Paleopathology: The study of disease in past populations through human remains and archaeological evidence. Skeletal evidence may constrain claims about the epidemic, though smallpox rarely leaves diagnostic bone changes.
