Antonine Wall

The Antonine Wall was a Roman frontier barrier built across central Scotland under Emperor Antoninus Pius in the second century CE. It marked Rome’s northernmost land frontier in Britain for roughly two decades.

Roman frontier: A militarized boundary zone where Rome monitored movement, defended territory, and projected imperial power. The wall was one element in Rome’s wider system of controlled borders.
Antonine Wall rampart: The turf-and-earth barrier forming the main defensive line of the Antonine Wall. Its rampart was built from turf on a stone foundation, unlike Hadrian’s stone curtain.
